    Job Summary:

    Craft individualized estate planning documents for clients, oversee the administration of estates, prepare estate and gift tax returns, and assist in other practice areas as needed.


    Specific Responsibilities:

    • Works with partner-level attorneys to provide research, writing, estate planning, probate, and taxation support on various legal issues

    • Communicates with clients to understand their legal concerns and needs to help provide them with essential pieces of advice

    • Strategizes on how to resolve the clients’ issues in a favorable and cost-effective manner

    • Stays informed about any current legislation

    • Builds trustworthy relationships with clients

    • Excellent research and writing skills

    • Vigorously engages in their own professional development

    • Possesses the attention to detail required understanding and implementing tax-based strategies

    • Performs other duties as assigned


    Education & Experience:

    • Experience working with and drafting probate and estate planning documents required

    • Experience preparing trust and estate annual and final accountings

    • Experience compiling tax information and preparing estate tax returns and gift tax returns

    • Business/corporate experience a plus, but not required

    • Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree from an accredited law school

    • Minimum 3 years’ estate planning and probate experience required

    • Master of Law in Taxation (LLM) preferred 

    • Must be licensed to practice law in Washington State


    Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

    • Experience in drafting estate planning, probate and trust documents

    • Strong knowledge in preparation of estate tax returns

    • Knowledge of tax preparation software (knowledge of GEMS is a plus)

    • Knowledge of probate and estate planning forms/procedures

    • Proficiency in Excel, Westlaw

    • Strong academic credentials 

    • Strong interpersonal skills

    The Federal Public Defender for the Western District of Washington (FPD) is hiring a full-time  criminal defense paralegal to specialize in case management, including proofreading, formatting,  and filing documents, while supporting attorneys and clients at all stages of a case. The paralegal  should have document-production and editing experience, initiative, resourcefulness, creativity,  compassion, and a desire to stand up for accused persons even when the evidence against them is strong. The FPD provides zealous and holistic legal representation to people charged with federal  crimes who cannot afford an attorney.  

    Responsibilities: The paralegal will contribute to an inclusive office culture and collaborate with  attorneys, investigators, social workers, and other staff to provide litigation support in federal  district court and various appeals courts. The paralegal duties include the following: 

    Format, proofread, and file pleadings in federal and state courts in compliance with office style guides and jurisdiction-specific rules and procedures 

    Check citations and generate tables of contents and authorities in legal briefs Draft, format, proofread, and submit client letters and other correspondence Perform PACER and other online data searches 

    Maintain case calendars in accordance with courtroom procedures and communicate with  case team members about scheduling and deadlines 

    Organize and help maintain electronic client files 

    Assist with collecting client records 

    Schedule legal calls  

    Assist with electronic discovery management and organization 

    Prepare materials for court hearings and trials 

    Participate in team, department, and organization meetings and trainings Suggest and implement solutions to streamline workflow across the department, including  back-up coverage for the operations unit at the discretion of the chief paralegal 

    Selection Criteria: The selected candidate will have a demonstrated commitment to high-quality  document preparation, case management, client support, and teamwork. The paralegal must be  able to manage a full caseload, prioritize tasks accordingly, and work flexible hours. The  position demands excellent communication and organizational skills, proficiency with Microsoft  Word and other document-preparation software, and a high degree of personal responsibility and  integrity.

    Requirements: The successful candidate must have a college degree (or the equivalent of three  years of general experience) and a minimum of three years of specialized experience in the  primary duties of this position. The duty station is in our Seattle office, and partial telework is  available; full-time telework is not.     Salary and Benefits: This position has a starting salary range of $81,242 to $136,832 (Grade 11,  Step 1 to Grade 14, Step 1) and a full performance salary range of $105,612 to $177,885 (Grade 11, Step 10 to Grade 14, Step 10) based on the Judicial Salary Plan effective January 1,  2024. Salary will be based on professional experience. Benefits include health, long-term care,  and life insurance, plus 11 paid federal holidays, 13 days of paid sick leave, and 13 days of paid  vacation leave annually. (The rate of vacation accrual increases with years of service.) The  position is eligible for the Federal Employees Retirement System and the Thrift Savings Plan,  which matches up to 5% of employee contributions. Salary is paid biweekly by direct deposit.

    The Federal Public Defender for the Western District of Washington is hiring a Director of  Administration, a high-level position that reports directly to the Federal Defender and plays a  critical role in the office’s mission of providing top-tier legal services to its clients. The Director  of Administration manages the administration and operations in support of both office locations  (Seattle and Tacoma), 60+ staff and interns, and our mission of providing diligent, zealous, and  holistic criminal defense representation. Our office is recognized as a leading public defense law  firm that looks for innovative ways to serve its clients and have a progressive impact on the  criminal legal system, both locally and nationally. 

    The Director of Administration is a one-of-a-kind position. We are looking for a leader who can  work cooperatively and act independently, manage finite resources effectively, and understand the relationship between our office and the federal court system. The Director of Administration directly supervises at least three staff members with administrative, financial, or information  technology responsibilities, while also helping supervise office-wide operations and serving as a  key executive advisor to the Federal Defender. 

    Responsibilities: The Director of Administration acts as the principal advisor to the Federal  Defender on all aspects of office administration and management. The Director of  Administration ensures compliance with national and local policies and must learn the  requirements of the Guide to Judiciary Policy, the Defender Services Operations Manual,  applicable state and federal statutes, GSA rules and regulations, and directives from the  Administrative Office of the U.S. Courts, Defender Services Office, GSA, and other agencies as  needed.  

    General administration, management, and supervision: 

    Directly assists with day-to-day operations, process improvement, policy development, and short- and long-term strategic planning. 

    Supervises and directs administrative, financial, human resources (in conjunction with  our Personnel Administrator), and IT functions. 

    Works to recognize issues and improve office management, efficiency, and effectiveness. Develops and maintains internal controls to ensure adequate separation of duties exists for financial, procurement, property management, and human resource functions. 

    Budget and financial management: 

    Manages financial operations, develops spending plans, and oversees accounting  functions, including the disbursement of appropriate funds.

    Formulates the annual budget, develops caseload projections, analyzes staffing needs and  resource allocation, and prepares hiring plans. 

    Prepares monthly variance reports, status of funds reports, and workload reports for  review and approval by the Federal Defender. 

    Human resources and personnel management: 

    Advises on hiring, staffing, position classification and compensation, employee  performance and evaluation, dispute resolution, benefits administration, and personnel  policies. 

    Develops strategies to recruit and retain a diverse workforce.  

    Collaborates on planning and implementing staff training and development. Collaborates on a comprehensive onboarding program for all new employees and interns, and facilitates offboarding and exit interviews.  

    Conducts performance evaluations for administrative staff. 

    Procurement of government goods and services: 

    Determines the need for, and directs procurement of, supplies, equipment, furnishings, and professional services in compliance with judiciary procurement policy. Trains and supervises employees responsible for various procurement duties. 

    Property management: 

    Collaborates with case management, custodial, disposal, and procurement administrators  to manage records storage systems and accountable property inventories.  Prepares for a Seattle office remodel in 2024–2025.  

    The Director of Administration also provides mentorship and helps ensure employees are  adequately trained to perform their assigned duties. The position requires frequent travel between  the Seattle and Tacoma offices and occasional out-of-district travel for attendance at  administrative, case management, and/or financial conferences.  

    Qualifications: The Federal Defender seeks a Director of Administration who is a trusted and  reliable individual with a heart for public service, good judgment, and an appreciation for the  importance of diversity and teamwork. The Director of Administration must be able to work  individually and collaboratively and perform their responsibilities with a strong sense of ethics  and integrity.     Requirements: The successful candidate should have at least three years’ general experience  and three years’ specialized experience in public administration, office management, or a related  field. Applicants must be U.S. citizens or meet the requirements of the Administrative Office of  the U.S. Courts. As a condition of employment, candidates must be fingerprinted and complete a  background check. A prior criminal conviction is not necessarily disqualifying. Partial telework  is available for this position, but full-time telework is not. 

    Salary and Benefits: This position has a starting salary range of $136,832 to $160,950  (Grade 14, Step 1 to Grade 15, Step 1) based on the Judicial Salary Plan effective January 1,  2024. The full performance salary range extends to $191,900 (Grade 15, Step 10). Salary will be  based on professional experience and the number of positions supervised. Benefits include health  and life insurance plus 11 paid federal holidays, 13 days of paid sick leave, and 13 days of paid  vacation leave annually. (The rate of vacation accrual increases with years of service.) The  position is eligible for the Federal Employees Retirement System and the Thrift Savings Plan,  which matches up to 5% of employee contributions. Salary is paid biweekly by direct deposit.  

    Office Information: The Western Washington Federal Public Defender office was established  in 1975. We provide legal counsel for low-income individuals who face federal criminal  prosecutions in our district, which covers the area west of the Cascade Mountains from Oregon  to the Canadian border. Our attorneys represent clients at all stages of proceedings including pre charge, at trial, on appeal, and post-conviction. Our staff of 54 full-time employees includes  administrators, attorneys, case managers, investigators, paralegals, and social workers. Our CJA  program provides critical support and training to private attorneys who represent low-income  clients and is nationally recognized as a leader in CJA panel administration and client service.

    OAH is currently looking to fill multiple temporary Line Administrative Law Judge (ALJ) positions . ALJs are critical to the successful completion of the OAH mission. Line ALJs contribute to the mission by managing a caseload, completing pre-hearing work, conducting hearings that are fair in substance and appearance, and issuing well-reasoned decisions within the agency's timeliness standards.

     

    Please note:

    • These are temporary positions that are expected to be 12-month appointments, but ultimately will depend on funding.
    • These positions may be eligible for either a full-time or a hybrid telework schedule, as some caseloads have in-person hearing responsibilities required. If teleworking, the alternate worksite must be located in Washington.
    • These positions will report to one of the following duty stations based on business need:
      • Olympia, Seattle, Spokane Valley or Tacoma
      • If assigned duty station is Seattle, an additional 5% King County premium pay will be added to the posted base salary range.
    • The salary for these positions will be $103,008 (range 70, step H). ALJs receive a 2-step increase (approximately 5%) in their salaries on their anniversary date annually until they reach the top of the salary range.
