    About the OPD Advisory Committee

    RCW 2.70.030 creates a 13-member OPD Advisory Committee and directs the Committee to:

    • Meet at least quarterly
    • Review at least biennially the performance of the OPD Director, and submit reviews to the Chief Justice
    • Receive reports from the OPD Director
    • Make policy recommendations to the Legislature and the Supreme Court
    • Approve the office's budget requests
    • Advise the Director regarding administration and oversight of the office's program areas
    • Carry out other duties as authorized or required by law

    About the Role: Chair of the OPD Advisory Committee

    As provided in RCW 2.70.030, the Chief Justice of the Washington Supreme Court appoints the Chair of the OPD Advisory Committee.

    During the term of appointment, no appointee may:

    • Provide indigent defense services funded by a city, a county, or the state, except on a pro bono basis
    • Serve as a judge except on a pro tem basis or as a court employee
    • Serve as a prosecutor or prosecutor employee

    Judge J. Michael (“Mike”) Díaz of the Washington Court of Appeals, Division One, is seeking to hire a term

    law clerk to start in August 2027. The term will end in August 2029. Judge Diaz will begin accepting

    applications on June 1, 2026, and will consider applications beginning on June 15, 2026, until the position

    is filled. Interviews will be conducted, if possible, the weeks of June 29 and July 6, with hiring offer(s) to

    be made in early July.

    The Court of Appeals handles appeals from Washington courts of general jurisdiction in all areas of law,

    including criminal, civil, and domestic matters. Judge Díaz seeks applicants with varied personal and

    professional backgrounds, who are interested in rigorous legal research and precise legal writing, in a

    collaborative and collegial environment. Candidates must be law school graduates or have completed the

    APR 6 law clerk program (or equivalent). Practicing attorneys are encouraged to apply. The law clerk

    salary is subject to state law and law clerks also receive state employee benefits.

    Qualifications

    • 3–5 years of law practice, including at least 1 year of in-house experience
    • Knowledge of commercial laws with experience developing, drafting, reviewing, and negotiating commercial and licensing contracts with multinational companies
    • Strong writing and communication skills, including executive-level communications
    • Exceptional attention to detail
    • Ability to manage multiple priorities under tight deadlines

    Preferred Skills

    • Significant in-house experience at technology organizations
    • Complex commercial transaction structuring and drafting experience, including developing and customizing novel agreements without templates
    • Experience in corporate governance, compliance, and associated filings and reporting

    Compensation & Benefits

    Salary Range: $120,000 – $150,000 annually (Washington) Pay is based on market location and may vary depending on experience, skills, education, and other job-related factors.
