    DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
    Staff Attorneys assist the court in resolving all types of motions and cases before the court and in handling court administrative matters as requested to include drafting prehearing memoranda, opinions, rulings, and orders.
    KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:
    Knowledge of: Washington State law and the judicial system, including the rules governing court procedures and the appellate process; relevant citation and cite-checking sources; strong command of legal writing and research skills; and experience with word processing.
    Ability to: Work independently and with others, usually under time pressures; interpret and apply court rules; understand complex legal issues; apply legal principles; exercise sound legal judgment; communicate effectively, orally and in writing; maintain confidentiality; and develop working knowledge of significant legal problems and trends. Finally, the job requires establishing and maintaining effective relationships with judges, commissioners, court personnel, the legal community and others.

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
    Graduation from an accredited law school AND a member in good standing in the Washington State Bar Association; AND four years’ experience in public or private appellate practice, an appellate court, or judicially related system.

     $66,684 to $87,528 depending upon experience (Range 69)
    Salary will begin at entry level. Exceptional or appellate court experience may result in a higher hiring salary.

    Full-Time Temporary Research & Writing Specialist

    The Federal Public Defender for the Western District of Washington is accepting applications for a fulltime temporary (a year and a day) Research and Writing Specialist to be stationed in the Seattle office.


    The Federal Public Defender operates under authority of the Criminal Justice Act to provide defense services in federal criminal cases and related matters by appointment from the court.

    Requirements. The applicant must be a licensed attorney in good standing with a federal and state bar and have significant experience in federal sentencing law, including the federal sentencing guidelines.
    The applicant must possess excellent research, writing, and communication skills. The applicant must be available to start by January 4, 2016.


    Duties. The primary duties of this position include: (1) reviewing approximately 200 to 300 cases to determine eligibility for relief under Johnson v. United States, 135 S. Ct. 2551 (2015); (2) drafting
    documents to be filed in U.S. District Court and Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals; (3) providing legal research and writing in habeas corpus litigation; and (4) providing legal research and writing for other matters.


    Selection Criteria. The successful applicant will have an established capacity, or clearly demonstrated aptitude, for excellence in criminal defense practice, a commitment to the representation of indigent
    accused persons, and a reputation for integrity. Applicants must also possess the ability to communicate effectively with clients, colleagues, and court and agency personnel. The position requires strong legal
    research and word processing skills, the ability to analyze legal issues from complex records, and the ability to write clearly and concisely. Federal appellate and habeas experience is strongly preferred.


    Salary and Benefits. The starting salary of a Research and Writing Specialist is based upon prior legal experience ranging from two to seven years. The salary range is $51,646 to $123,796 depending on education and years of relevant experience consistent with federal guidelines. This position includes government employment benefits including health and life insurance, retirement, and the Thrift Savings Plan. The position depends on federal funding and is subject to mandatory Electronic Funds Transfer
    (direct deposit). Employment will be provisional pending the successful outcome of fingerprinting and a background check.

    JOB SUMMARY:
     

    The Senior Attorney (Civil Division) in the City Attorney's Office provides consultation, advice and representation for assigned City departments and may occasionally represent the City in civil litigation. The best candidate for this position must have significant experience in at least one or more areas of law applicable to the City's operation, such as: municipal, finance, land use, transportation, utilities, employment, telecommunications and administrative law.  An emphasis in employment law and/or land use is highly desirable.     Education

    •Five or more years of experience, as an attorney with significant experience involving legal advice relevant to the areas of practice found in municipal government, or equivalent experience;
    •Experience with complex legal agreements;
    •Working knowledge of modern policies and practices of municipal law and public administration;
    •Strong knowledge of land use  and/or employment  law, with background in both areas of law being ideal;
    •Experience in analyzing, evaluating, negotiating and litigating cases; handling appeals; researching and drafting legal documents, briefs, and appeals preferred but not required.
