Have a nanny or want to hire one? A housekeeper or other household help? This seminar will provide practical tips on the employment law and tax implications of hiring household help, including nannies, housekeepers, and others. We will cover federal tax filing requirements such as W-2s, 1099s, and Schedule H, as well as state Employment Security and Department of Labor and Industries filing and payment requirements. And we will discuss employment law issues that typically arise in this area, including minimum wage and other rules applicable to employers.

Cory Johnson is a shareholder at Colvin + Hallett where she helps clients resolve federal and state tax disputes, including representing clients undergoing audits, at administrative appeals, in litigation in federal courts, and clients under investigation or charged with committing tax crimes. Cory has twin six-year-old girls, and when she discovered the nanny service was keeping nearly half of what she was paying for her summer nanny to file and pay taxes, she decided to pay her next nanny directly. She will share what she learned about the various tax filing and payment obligations for hiring and paying household help.

Joanna Silverstein is a shareholder at Littler where she represents employers in a wide variety of employment law matters arising under federal and state law, including discrimination, harassment, retaliation, wrongful discharge, and wage and hour disputes. She also advises clients on preventing these types of claims, and will share tips on hiring and employing household help. Joanna has two young boys.

About Region 10 Honors Attorney Fellowships

The EPA Region 10 Honors Attorney Fellowship is designed for a recent law school graduate with excellent academic credentials and strong interests in an environmental law career and public service.

It provides an opportunity to practice law in a leading governmental environmental organization and to receive extensive training in and exposure to environmental law and policy work in the public sector.

Region 10 offers new Fellows significant responsibility, the opportunity to handle a challenging caseload that includes enforcement and counseling work, and extensive training and mentoring from experienced colleagues with recognized expertise. EPA offers a diverse and supportive work environment.

The Office of Regional Counsel is responsible for preparing administrative, judicial, and criminal cases against violators of environmental laws. These cases require the development and use of technical and legal strategies for negotiation and litigation.

Attorney caseloads are not confined to one industry, statute, state, or tribe. The primary statutes enforced by EPA are the Clean Air Act, Clean Water Act, Safe Drinking Water Act, Toxic Substances Control Act, Resource Conservation and Recovery Act, Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act (Superfund), and Federal Insecticide, Fungicide, and Rodenticide Act. We work collaboratively with state, tribal, and local governments to implement national environmental laws.

In addition to preparing enforcement actions, attorneys are responsible for counseling the Regional Administrator and program directors on the interpretation of environmental laws, regulations, and policies. Furthermore, attorneys are expected to participate in civil or criminal litigation of cases referred to the Department of Justice and to represent the EPA in administrative proceedings.

The Office of Regional Counsel employs approximately 35 attorneys, plus support staff.

Women represent half the world’s population but continue to be under-represented in the legal profession at all attorney levels around the world.

Dear SCWLA members and friends,

This is a personal letter to the women lawyers of South Carolina, and to women lawyers everywhere.

The senseless massacre in Charleston this week has stunned, and saddened, all of us.  Many of our members knew the people, good people, who were gunned down in what is being called, I fear correctly, a “hate crime.”  I knew Reverend Pinckney myself.

As lawyers, this event calls us to rise up as defenders of equality, to stand up as protectors of liberty, and to speak up as crusaders against hatred.  In a profound way, this unspeakable tragedy summons us to be our very best selves.  So today, the women lawyers of South Carolina say to all involved, “We will not tolerate this conduct -- not here, not now, not ever.”

But, my friends, long before we ever opened a book to read the rule of law, there was another book written on our hearts.  It is the book that teaches us, in this transitory life, to love our neighbors as ourselves.  And it is this rule, above all others, that will carry us through this valley of the shadow.

In closing, I urge you to keep your hearts open.  The survivors of this tragedy, the members of the historic church where the unthinkable happened, are setting this example for all of us.  I, for one, am humbled by their forgiveness and strengthened by their faith.

Ladder Down is a national program for women attorneys at all levels of practice to hone their leadership and business development skills. MAMA Seattle invites women attorneys in the Seattle area to apply to this year-long program, which features a series of monthly workshops lead by nationally recognized career coaches who specialize in assisting women attorneys build a book of business, or rise through the corporate counsel ranks.

Faculty members Marianne Trost and Lynn Moran will lead group presentations on Saturday mornings, supported by monthly small group sessions that allow for individualized follow up and accountability.

The program will start in September 2015, and will be hosted in the offices of Perkins Coie in downtown Seattle.

Superior Court invites you to attend two informational Brown Bag lunch meetings to hear  presentations from Corrections, Superior Court, and other criminal justice partners on how the move to the new jail will impact your daily work on criminal cases.  Currently, we plan to start the first meeting with a panel presentation to provide information and will open the meeting to questions after presentations are complete.  Because this topic will, we believe, generate much discussion and many questions, we plan to hold two different sessions.  However, the panel presentation will only happen during the first meeting.  We look forward to sponsoring this important discussion and to seeing many of you there!
