Hello everyone. I’m a senior at Lewis and Clark High School in Spokane, WA, and I’m completing a research project as part of my AP Capstone class on the effectiveness of mindfulness meditation as a technique for reducing anxiety in lawyers.

Some studies in recent years examining the effectiveness of mindfulness meditation for lawyers such as the study between the National Association of Women Lawyers and Seyfarth Shaw have found promising results. In order to build off these, my study tries to focus on being realistic about how people can feasibly incorporate mindfulness into their lives and the impacts of even brief meditations over a short period of time.

I’ve consulted with some professors at Gonzaga and EWU to design the study and gotten approval from my school’s administration, so now I’m trying to find participants. I’ve designed a two-week long daily meditation program using the mobile mindfulness meditation application “Headspace.” Participants will be divided into control and experimental groups, and I’ll measure changes via a short anxiety survey taken at the beginning and end of the study. The time commitment would be about fifteen minutes or less for fourteen days and everything will be communicated over the internet, mainly using Google Forms. I’m using a delayed control group design, which means the experimental group will have access to the meditation first, but after the control group has fulfilled their commitments and taken the second anxiety inventory they will also get access to the meditation program so that they have access to the same opportunity. If you want to be assigned the top projects and cases, you need to be seen as someone who has impeccable judgment. And that’s a problem for women. In this interactive lunch seminar, we’ll look at all-too-common stereotypes about women’s judgment and the science debunking those myths. A growing number of studies show that it’s gender bias, not gender differences, that create obstacles for women who want to thrive at work. We’ll identify strategies that you can use to tackle these kinds of gender bias. 

Speaker: Therese Huston, Ph.D., has a mission—to make the workplace as successful for women as it is for men. Therese is a cognitive scientist at Seattle University and the New York Times calls her new book, How Women Decide, “required reading on Wall Street.” She debunks popular myths about how men and women make decisions. (We’ll be giving away a copy of Therese’s book at the lunch!) Therese received her BA from Carleton College and her Ph.D. in cognitive psychology from Carnegie Mellon University. Last fall, she gave her first TEDx Talk. Her work has been featured in Forbes and the Financial Times, she’s written for the New York Times and Harvard Business Review, and she’s been interviewed on NPR. Microsoft, Amazon, the Cleveland Clinic, and Harvard Business School have asked Therese to lead workshops on how to create more inclusive workplaces for women.

Aurora Bearse. Aurora R. Bearse was appointed as a court commissioner for Division II of the Court of Appeals, effective May 1, 2012. Prior to her appointment, Commissioner Bearse served as an administrative law judge for the Washington State Office of Administrative Hearings. She has also served as a staff attorney for Division II of the Court of Appeals, as an Assistant Appellate Federal Public Defender in the Fifth Circuit, as an associate attorney at Weil, Gotshal & Manges (New York and Houston offices), and as a judicial law clerk for Judge Robert R. Beezer (9th Circuit) and Judge William H. Walls (DNJ).

Commissioner Bearse graduated with honors from Rutgers-Newark School of Law. She was the senior articles editor of the Rutgers Law Review. She holds a bachelor's degree in Religion & History from Rutgers University. She serves on the executive board of the Seattle Children's Autism Guild, an all-volunteer organization that raises funds for the Autism Center at Seattle Children's Hospital. She is married to attorney Ian Crosby, a partner in the Seattle office of Susman Godfrey. The couple have two young daughters.

Wendy Kearns. Wendy Kearns is a Partner and Co-Chair of the Technology, Advertising, Trademark, and Entertainment group at Davis Wright Tremaine. She specializes in technology and intellectual property law, with extensive experience in transactions involving software, cloud computing, and financial technology, and is a frequent speaker on those topics. Wendy is a member of DWT’s Diversity Committee management group and spends a significant amount of time on the firm’s diversity efforts. In addition to her time at DWT, Wendy has worked at her own firm, been in-house at Microsoft Corporation, and began her career as a securities lawyer at Venture Law Group (which then merged into Heller Ehrman). She has three children, ages 14, 11, and 7, and raises them on Vashon Island.

Lori Lynn Phillips. Lori Lynn Phillips is a principal in the Office of the General Counsel for PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP. Prior to joining PwC, she was a partner at Orrick Herrington & Sutcliffe LLP and a shareholder at Heller Ehrman LLP. For much of her twenty-year career in private practice, she served as outside counsel to PwC and other national accounting firms in defense of professional liability claims, securities class actions, and regulatory counseling and enforcement matters. She also represented directors and officers and issuers in internal investigations and SEC enforcement proceedings as well as derivative actions and other securities-related litigation and handled a broad range of civil litigation matters. She received her J.D. from Yale Law School, where she was Managing Editor of The Yale Law Journal, and she graduated summa cum laude from Gustavus Adolphus College. Lori Lynn has four teenagers who are attending Garfield High School.
