    The Pierce County Prosecuting Attorney's Office, located in downtown Tacoma, is the largest law firm in the county, employing approximately 217 staff including a large number of deputy prosecutors.  Pierce County, which includes Tacoma, has a population of 813,600 and growing.  The office has three divisions:  the Criminal Division, which is responsible for prosecuting all felonies, misdemeanors and juvenile cases; the Civil Division, which is responsible for providing legal advice to County officials and representing the County's interest in court; and the Family Support Division, which is an integral part of the State child support system. Position Summary

    NATURE OF WORK
     

    This position performs highly complex professional level work in the legal field as a Deputy Pierce County Prosecuting Attorney in the Civil Division acting as a legal representative of Pierce County, handling all phases of litigation including practice in state and federal trial and appellate courts.  Duties are performed with professional discretion and within office guidelines, professional ethics and standards, and legal requirements.  An attorney in this classification exercises independent judgment, initiative and resourcefulness in adapting policies and precedents to complex situations or to provide legal advice regarding a course of action.  This is an exempt, represented position.  
     

    ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

     

    • Independently handles litigation and legal matters on behalf of Pierce County in Superior Court, United States District Court, Appellate Courts, and quasi-judicial bodies.  The attorney represents the County through pre-litigation claims processes, discovery, motion hearings, trials and any appeals.
    •  Drafts and prepares legal briefs, memoranda, and discovery using word processing skills.
    •  Advocates verbally and in writing in court and litigation related proceedings.
    •  Handles other projects as assigned.
    •  Just as important as the ability to perform the essential functions of the position are the following core competencies and characteristics:

    RECRUITING REQUIREMENTS

     
    U.S. Citizen (RCW 36.27.010, RCW 36.27.040, and RCW 29) and admitted as an attorney in the State of Washington (RCW 36.27.010) plus at least three to five years of civil litigation practice, including tort defense experience.
