    ABOUT THE OFFICE
     
    The Pierce County Prosecuting Attorney's Office is located in downtown Tacoma and employs approximately 213 staff, which includes over 100 deputy prosecutors.  Pierce County has a population of 813,600 and growing.  The office is comprised of the Criminal Division, which includes the Homicide and Violent Crimes Division, Major Crimes Division, Misdemeanor Division, Juvenile Division, Appeals Division, Investigative Services Division, and Victim-Witness Assistance Services Division.  The Criminal Division reviews more than 22,800 criminal cases every year.  The office's Civil Division provides legal advice to county officials and represents the county's interests in court. The Family Support Division protects the best interests of children. Position Summary

    This is high level work in the legal field as a Pierce County Deputy Prosecuting Attorney acting as a legal representative of Pierce County's Public Works Division. Duties may include handling complex public works construction disputes/litigation, all phases of condemnation proceedings, contract and leasing issues, airport, ferry, roads, sewer, flooding, surface water issues, and other projects and clients as assigned. An attorney in this classification exercises independent judgment, initiative and resourcefulness in adapting policies and precedents to complex situations and to provide legal advice regarding a course of action. Duties are performed with professional discretion and within office guidelines, professional ethics and standards, and legal requirements. This is an exempt, represented position.
     
    ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
     

    • Handles legal matters and litigation on behalf of Pierce County in state court and administrative tribunals. Initially involved at the claim stage, the attorney will remain involved through pre-trial preparation, trial and any appeals taken therefrom.
     
    • Works directly with officials and appointed department heads to provide legal advice in their official duties, review of existing policies and, in appropriate cases, the formulation of new policies, and the drafting and preparation of legal opinions and memoranda.
     
    • Direct involvement in both the negotiation and execution stages of the contracting process for procurements, acquisitions and construction projects.
     
    • Handles condemnation litigation on behalf of Pierce County.
     
    • Works with the executive, legislative, and other agencies and branches of county government to develop proposed legislation that the county wishes to present to the state legislature.
     
    • Performs other related work as required.

    U.S. Citizen (RCW 36.27.010, RCW 36.27.040, and RCW 29) and admitted as an attorney in the State of Washington (RCW 36.27.010) plus at least five years of civil litigation practice, including construction and/or condemnation experience.
     
    The ability to successfully complete and pass a thorough background investigation and interview is required.  A valid Washington State driver's license is also required.
