Full-Time Temporary Research & Writing Specialist POSITION #: 2016-2-LEGAL ANNOUNCED: October 29, 2015 CLOSES: Priority given to Applications received by November 20, 2015 The Federal Public Defender for the Western District of Washington is accepting applications for a fulltime temporary (a year and a day) Research and Writing Specialist to be stationed in the Seattle office.
The Federal Public Defender operates under authority of the Criminal Justice Act to provide defense services in federal criminal cases and related matters by appointment from the court.
Requirements. The applicant must be a licensed attorney in good standing with a federal and state bar and have significant experience in federal sentencing law, including the federal sentencing guidelines. The applicant must possess excellent research, writing, and communication skills. The applicant must be available to start by January 4, 2016.
Duties. The primary duties of this position include: (1) reviewing approximately 200 to 300 cases to determine eligibility for relief under Johnson v. United States, 135 S. Ct. 2551 (2015); (2) drafting documents to be filed in U.S. District Court and Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals; (3) providing legal research and writing in habeas corpus litigation; and (4) providing legal research and writing for other matters.
Selection Criteria. The successful applicant will have an established capacity, or clearly demonstrated aptitude, for excellence in criminal defense practice, a commitment to the representation of indigent accused persons, and a reputation for integrity. Applicants must also possess the ability to communicate effectively with clients, colleagues, and court and agency personnel. The position requires strong legal research and word processing skills, the ability to analyze legal issues from complex records, and the ability to write clearly and concisely. Federal appellate and habeas experience is strongly preferred.
Salary and Benefits. The starting salary of a Research and Writing Specialist is based upon prior legal experience ranging from two to seven years. The salary range is $51,646 to $123,796 depending on education and years of relevant experience consistent with federal guidelines. This position includes government employment benefits including health and life insurance, retirement, and the Thrift Savings Plan. The position depends on federal funding and is subject to mandatory Electronic Funds Transfer (direct deposit). Employment will be provisional pending the successful outcome of fingerprinting and a background check.

JOB SUMMARY:
The Senior Attorney (Civil Division) in the City Attorney's Office provides consultation, advice and representation for assigned City departments and may occasionally represent the City in civil litigation. The best candidate for this position must have significant experience in at least one or more areas of law applicable to the City's operation, such as: municipal, finance, land use, transportation, utilities, employment, telecommunications and administrative law. An emphasis in employment law and/or land use is highly desirable. Civil litigation experience is helpful.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: •Advising departments, employees, the City Council, and boards and commissions, both orally and in writing on all facets of municipal law. •Providing appropriate legal interpretation of rules and laws that govern the conduct of business. •Answering inquiries from the City Council and the general public. •Assisting departments in preparing resolutions and ordinances for adoption by the City Council. •Handling multiple tasks and prioritize and schedule the work of self and others. •Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with employees, City Council, and other public entities.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Education •Juris Doctor from an ABA accredited law school and membership in good standing with the Washington State Bar is required.

The Federal Public Defender for the Western District of Washington is seeking an experienced Social Worker/Paralegal in the Seattle office. Additional duties will include serving as a liaison with the Federal Probation Office, community outreach organizations, and social service providers; creating and maintaining a database of these partners’ contact information; and travel to the Tacoma office and other areas within the Western District of Washington.
Essential for this position is the ability to manage a heavy caseload, work flexible hours, and travel occasionally. Job Summary: Within a variety of country contexts, the Senior Gender and Land Tenure Specialist provides policy, analytical and program implementation expertise on women’s land rights, including access to property and inheritance, rural land tenure security, access to land, land rights formalization, land markets, land administration and management, and resolution of land and related disputes with a focus on impacts on women and their families. The Specialist will provide technical inputs related to women’s rights and gender and support integrating gender expertise across programs and projects, as well as co-lead global advocacy efforts around women’s land rights.
Link land rights to other human rights and related fields such as gender-based violence, health, food security, agricultural productivity and natural resource management, and climate change. The Specialist conducts gender-based analyses (both from the desk and in the field), drafts research and briefing papers, advisory memos, training modules, presentations, advocacy materials, and other products. In a complementary manner, the Specialist manages related assignments, projects, and tasks, and also contributes to the pursuit of private donor funding, fee-for-service opportunities, and public sector grants. The Specialist will be responsible for collaborating with a number of individuals, teams and partnerships across the organization and in external networks and coalitions.
Reporting and relationships: The Specialist will report to the Global Director of Landesa Center for Women’s Land Rights (LCWLR) and will work closely with other directors as required by particular task assignments.
Availability: The Specialist will be expected to work a standard workweek of 40 hours plus additional hours as necessary to get the job done. The position requires significant international travel (average of 60-80 days per year).
