Position Overview
The Whatcom County Public Defender's Office is seeking a Deputy Public Defender I to join our team in providing quality legal representation to individuals in need.
Primary Responsibilities
- Serve as court-appointed counsel representing individuals accused of misdemeanors or felonies in superior, district, and juvenile courts
- Represent appointed clients in all phases of criminal proceedings, including:
- Arraignment
- Pretrial hearings
- Trial preparation
- Plea negotiations
- Trial and sentencing
- Conduct thorough investigation and preparation of each assigned case
- Manage a primary caseload consisting of misdemeanors (juvenile or felony cases may be assigned based on experience)
- Assist management and other staff as directed
- Comply with all legal standards and requirements
Position Details
Supervisor: Assistant Chief Deputy
Schedule: Monday - Friday, 8:00 AM - 5:00 PM
Salary Range: $7,203 - $10,458 monthly (AFSCME-9, DOQ)
