I wanted to make sure you received an invitation to our panel and reception taking place on November 17th. Titled “Serving Justice Through Diversity,” the panel promises to be a great discussion on the interplay between diversity, the judiciary, and justice. We will be joined by Justice Debra Stephens, Justice Steven Gonzalez and Mr. Ron Ward as panelists and our Executive Director, Barbara Arnwine, will be serving as moderator.
Also, we are currently processing applications for the Judicial Diversity Program (JDP) 2014-15 mentee year. The goal of the program is to educate participants on the importance of judicial diversity, empower participants to advocate for it within the larger community, and shed light on the appointment and election process – this will be facilitated through our monthly workshops, panels, and judge mentors. We hope to invigorate and support a network of potential judicial candidates and the advocates that will support them.
Our deadline for applying was November 1st, however, I have noticed that key segments of the community are not represented in the applicant pool and we would like the mentee class to be as diverse as possible. The ideal candidate is 2-8 years out of college with a commitment to social justice and judicial diversity. If any of your members would make strong candidates please encourage them to apply – we would happily waive the deadline. Application is available online.

For a $125 registration fee, that’s quite a deal. The Summit will be held in SeaTac at the Hilton Seattle Airport Hotel and Conference Center.
Attendees will learn about language access services, share ideas and resources, and brainstorm collaborative ways to meet the needs of limited-English proficient and Deaf individuals accessing programs and services around the State of Washington. The Summit program is attached.
Some notable speakers will be: Keynote Speaker Washington Supreme Court Justice Steve González, guest speakers Washington Supreme Court Justice Mary Yu, Mr. Linh Thai from Congressman Adam Smith's office, Senator Karen Keiser, Representative Cindy Ryu, and Representative Luis Moscoso. This Summit is particularly poignant as we mark the celebration of 50 years since the passage of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 by reflecting on past achievements and looking forward to the next 50 years of progress!

Applicants also need to be licensed to practice law in the jurisdiction where they plan to apply for a Fellowship. This re-entry program is for women lawyers who are currently unemployed as well as those who are working in temporary/contract jobs or in non-legal jobs due to the barriers faced when attempting to re-enter the legal profession after a hiatus from practicing law. To apply or learn more, please click here.
Please note: Since a goal of the Fellowship is to increase the number of women in leadership roles within law firms, applicants should have a strong interest in working for and advancing within a law firm environment.

“Restoring our City, Restoring Connections, Restoring Ourselves”
Featuring Andrea Brenneke, Director of Restorative Justice for the City of Seattle
Restorative Justice. Restorative Practices. Communities can come together to repair harm, heal, and restore balance after painful conflict or crime occurs. During our annual evening gala and celebration, Andrea Brenneke will inspire us to be part of an emerging network embracing this transformative practice in Seattle/King County and beyond. Evolving with humanity, many Restorative Practices, such as Justice Circles, have deep roots in indigenous cultures and traditions. Finding revival today, they offer a positive alternative to punitive justice and result in safer, more equitable, empowered, and resilient communities. When people and relationships are violated, resolution is found in understanding and accountability versus blame and punishment. It is a process of healing and empowerment.
Join us on a powerful day of remembrance and WBE’s big night out, September 11, as we learn how to be involved in the Restorative Justice movement. We will explore how Restorative Practices and principles can help us deepen our own relationships and resiliency when faced with interpersonal conflicts or the most tragic of crimes.
Andrea brings to this work twenty years of experience as a civil rights and employment lawyer with MacDonald Hoague & Bayless in Seattle (1992-2013). Andrea’s education includes: Harvard Law School, J.D. cum laude, 1992; University of Washington, BA with Honors and Distinction in Political Science, cum laude, 1988. Andrea’s public service includes a long history of engagement and grassroots involvement in her community and she is a graduate of Leadership Tomorrow (2000). She served on the Washington State Bar Association’s Board of Governors, the board and legal committee of Legal Voice (formerly the Northwest Women’s Law Center), and Chaired the King County Bar Association’s Young Lawyer’s Division. She served for many years as an Amicus Committee member of the Washington Employment Lawyers Association and has been a long time Eagle supporter of the Washington Association of Justice (formerly WSTLA). She is a former board member of the Compassionate Action Network, Intl (now Charter for Compassion, Int’l).

She has spent the past year ridding her body of cancer and is passionate about sharing all that she has learned as a health coach and cancer survivor. She strongly believes that it is not only nutritious food but a healthy lifestyle that creates a balanced, healthy bodyundefinedone that will thrive in today’s high stress culture.
