Understanding Cultural Dynamics in Civil Protection Order Hearings

Tuesday, November 17, 2026
12:00 – 1:00 PM PT
Live Webinar via Zoom

The Protection Order Reimbursement & Training (PORT) Project, in collaboration with the Gender and Justice Commission, invites you to a one-hour webinar on cultural dynamics in Civil Protection Order (CPO) hearings.

Dr. Carolyn West will highlight the disproportionate impacts of gender-based violence on Black women — including lack of representation, criminalization, and lethality — and review best practices to ensure racial equity in CPO hearings.

Learning Objectives
By the end of this webinar, judicial officers will be better able to:

1

Identify the disproportionate impacts of gender-based violence on Black women.

2

Recognize systemic bias and other barriers that impact the way Black women access protection through CPOs.

3

Apply culturally responsive and trauma-informed best practices in the courtroom to ensure racial equity in CPO hearings.
