GENERAL PURPOSE:
Sound Transit's legal department seeks a senior real estate attorney. As in-house counsel to a rapidly expanding regional transit authority, we advise agency staff and policy makers on complex legal matters and develop legal strategies and creative solutions that balance potential legal risks with strategic and public interests. We work with elected officials, the Federal Transit Administration, engineers, transportation planners, and other dedicated agency staff to plan, design, build and operate the region's high capacity transportation system. This is a new position intended to complement our existing team of 11 attorneys in a collegial environment in our Union Station offices.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
• Negotiate complex real estate transactions, including property acquisition and disposition, leases, joint development, and transit-oriented development.
• Collaborate with and manage outside counsel on eminent domain litigation, including dispute resolution processes.
• Review, draft, and negotiate intergovernmental agreements.
• Counsel Sound Transit Board and staff in implementing the requirements of the Uniform Act and Washington eminent domain law.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Education and Experience:
Juris Doctorate Degree and eight years of experience in a public or private practice with Washington transactional real estate as a significant component. A solid understanding of the principles of the Uniform Relocation Act. Demonstrated experience litigating Washington eminent domain cases is a plus. Experience counseling clients within a municipal law context. Active membership in good standing of the Washington State Bar (or equivalent).

Gates PSL is also home to the law school’s flagship and nationally recognized public service law scholarship program, the Gates Scholars Program. The Gates Scholars Program began in November 2005 at the UW Law. Created in honor of William H. Gates Sr., a prominent Washington state attorney and public servant, the program awards five scholarships on an annual basis to first year students entering the J.D. program. The program requires that scholars work five years in qualifying public service positions following graduation. The Assistant Director will be primarily responsible for managing the Gates Scholars Program which includes but is not limited to developing and implementing policies and procedures to recruit and retain Gates Scholars. Program development duties also include organizing activities that enrich the scholars’ law school experience, such as an annual retreat for 1Ls scholars, monthly dinners, and providing career coaching and academic advising. The position will be responsible for developing strong relationships with the Scholars program alumni and monitoring their professional service. The Assistant Director will also provide leadership assistance to the Director in managing the strategic planning, budget and administration of the Gates PSL including partnering with the Assistant Dean for Finance and Operations on fiscal and budgetary matters and reporting to the Gates PSL Advisory Board. This position must be able to work collaboratively as part of a holistic team that is first and foremost student-centered.
