    ELAP FAMILY LAW FELLOWSHIP

    Would you like a free opportunity to learn hands-on legal skills, earn CLE credits, network, have a space to start your own legal practice, and to have firms (both private and non-profit) want to hire you on the spot?

    The six-month intensive program is an opportunity for newly licensed attorneys pursuing a career in family law to gain direct experience in a supportive environment. Fellows volunteer half-time while receiving computer access, desks, phones, mentorship and training in Family Law, Domestic Violence, motions practice and pre-trial/trial preparation. Fellows are covered by ELAP’s malpractice insurance for all work done on ELAP cases.

    The attorney hired for this full-time position will provide legal services to survivors of domestic violence. The ideal candidate will have two years of family law experience. Demonstrated commitment to civil legal aid and related advocacy, and experience working with low-income, diverse, and marginalized communities is preferred.     DUTIES

    Evaluate the needs of and advise low-income survivors of DV through interviews and other methods of fact-gathering (court documents, police reports, third parties, etc.);

    Assist clients with domestic violence protection orders and related family law matters; Provide limited representation of clients for protection orders and family law motions through temporary orders. Respond or filing motions for reconsideration or revision;

    Regularly appear on the Domestic Violence and Family Law Motions Calendars in King County Superior Court;

    Supervise and advise on work performed by ELAP Family Law Fellows, externs, and volunteers including areas of court administrative rules, working with ELAP clients, drafting pleadings, and preparing for hearings;

    Mentor ELAP Family Law Fellows, externs, and volunteers;

    Attend Continuing Legal Education (“CLE”) courses identified as furthering the pursuit of ELAP’s DV staff attorney role;

    Represent ELAP at workgroups or other meetings sponsored by agencies in King County;

    Coordinate with community legal advocates regarding individual client needs in a team atmosphere;

    Fully comply with ELAP’s mission, vision, policies and procedures, and the Washington Rules of Professional Conduct;

    Perform other related duties as directed by the Executive Director.

    QUALIFICATIONS

    A graduate of an ABA-accredited law school with a JD degree;

    Minimum of 2 years of experience practicing Family Law in Washington State;

    Demonstrated practical experience as an attorney in Domestic Violence and Family Law cases, including case management, drafting of pleadings, interacting with the court system, and representation of clients in court;

    Licensed and in good standing to practice law in Washington;

    Outstanding verbal, written and interpersonal skills;

    Intermediate computer knowledge of PCs and database familiarity (Legal Server experience a plus);

    Self-starter with ability to work independently and as a part of a team;

    Ability to problem solve and utilize available resources;

    Must be able to commute between office locations;

    PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

     Lead the development of the ACLU-WA’s state legislative goals and the creation of strategies and messaging to advance them in Olympia.

     Review legislative proposals, assess their political viability, and evaluate whether and how the ACLU should engage. Coordinate legal analysis, research, and drafting of legislative proposals with ACLU-WA team members and cooperating attorneys.

     Persuasively represent the ACLU-WA’s interests in the state legislative process, and at local levels as appropriate, to lawmakers, executive agencies, and stakeholders.

     Support development of a plan to grow ACLU-WA’s lobbying capacity.

     Build trusted relationships with lawmakers, agency decision makers, and staff by providing clear, fact-based analysis and resources.

     In coordination with other ACLU-WA team members, represent the ACLU to coalition partners and before community, government, and academic groups.

     Collaborate across departments to prepare issue briefs, action alerts, and talking points, and explain ACLU legislative positions to local media.

     Collaborate with national ACLU staff regarding issues and legislative strategies for advancing the ACLU’s agenda at the federal level.

     Supervise ACLU-WA legislative session support staff and contract lobbyist(s), if any. Report regularly to the Political Director.

     Contribute to a positive, respectful, welcoming, and professional work environment for employees and volunteers.

     Attend various ACLU functions and handle other projects as assigned.

    QUALIFICATIONS

     A law degree and substantial knowledge of and demonstrated commitment to civil rights and civil liberties.

     At least three years of local, state, or federal legislative and/or policy advocacy with a focus on issues of civil rights, civil liberties, or criminal justice.

     Excellent leadership skills to develop allies and to facilitate communication and collaboration among them. Demonstrated ability to work with groups and individuals across the political spectrum.

     Excellent verbal and written communication skills; a "quick study" on an array of dynamic issues. Ability to stay organized in a fast-paced environment both in the office and on the road, to manage several projects simultaneously, and to adjust to frequently changing demands.
