    ABOUT THE OFFICE

    The Pierce County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office, located in downtown Tacoma, is the largest law firm in the county, employing approximately 217 staff including a large number of Deputy Prosecuting Attorneys. Pierce County, which includes Tacoma, has a population of 813,600 and growing. The office has three divisions: the Criminal Division, which is responsible for prosecuting all felony, misdemeanor, and juvenile criminal cases; the Civil Division, which is responsible for providing legal counsel to County officials and representing the County’s interest in court; and the Family Support Division, which is an integral part of the State child support system.

    NATURE OF WORK

    This position performs professional level work in the legal field as a Pierce County Deputy Prosecuting Attorney in the Misdemeanor Division, handling all aspects of District Court criminal practice, from arraignments and pre-trial conferences, to trials and post-conviction hearings. This is an entry-level position. Duties are performed with professional discretion and within office guidelines, professional ethics and standards, and legal requirements. This is an exempt, at-will, temporary position.

    ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

    • Represents the State of Washington, in Pierce County District Court, in all criminal cases from arraignment and pre-trial conferences, to trial and post-conviction hearings.
    • Independently manages a substantial caseload.
    • Prepares witnesses and strategy for trial.
    • Advises law enforcement personnel during the course of criminal investigations. Conducts case review and provides feedback to law enforcement officers on legal issues impacting admissibility of evidence.
    • Performs other related work as required.

    VISITING ASSISTANT PROFESSOR POSITIONS

    2017-2019

    Lewis & Clark Law School is now accepting applications for two visiting assistant professor (VAP) positions. Each VAP position will run for the 2017-2018 and 2018-2019 academic years. One VAP position is in Lewis & Clark Law School’s top-ranked environmental, natural resources and energy law program. The other VAP position is in Lewis & Clark Law School’s highly ranked lawyering program. Depending upon curricular needs, selected VAPs may teach courses in other programs as well. 

    The position is ideal for those interested in transitioning to a career in academia. VAPs will have the opportunity to focus on teaching, scholarly research, and writing in preparation for that transition. Each VAP will teach three courses per academic year and write at least one article or other scholarly piece per year. VAPs will receive mentoring from Lewis & Clark Law School’s full-time faculty. VAPs will also participate in faculty colloquia, committees, special visitor events, and other professional and social engagements throughout the academic year.

    Ideal candidates will have a J.D., at least 2 years of practical experience, the ability to teach and communicate effectively, and strong writing and research skills. We strongly encourage applications from persons in groups historically underrepresented in the legal profession. Ideal candidates will have experience working with diverse populations, demonstrated ability to contribute to campus diversity efforts, and/or evidence of cultural competence.

    Lewis & Clark Law School is located in Portland, Oregon.     JOB OVERVIEW

    TeamChild is seeking a full-time staff attorney in our Pierce County office in Tacoma Washington, located approximately 30 miles south of Seattle. TeamChild’s Pierce County Office will soon be celebrating our 20th year serving youth. The vision for this new staff attorney position was developed with input from community service providers and advocates for homeless youth. The new staff attorney will join our Pierce County team and allow us to expand our legal services to youth and young adults experiencing housing instability or homelessness. The position will also involve policy advocacy on behalf of youth and technical assistance to support local community agencies that provide housing and community based services to youth and young adults experiencing homelessness. Primary job duties include providing holistic civil legal representation to youth with a specific focus on youth and young adults (up to age 24) experiencing housing instability or homelessness. Many of these young people are at risk of, or already involved in, the juvenile or criminal justice and child welfare systems.

    Advocacy involves breaking down legal barriers to a wide array of community based services and supports, including but not limited to, education, safe and stable living situations, mental health care and medical services, and other civil rights issues. Activities include legal advice and/or representation in administrative or judicial proceedings, negotiations or other dispute resolution processes, advocacy in juvenile and criminal court in partnership with public defenders to promote alternatives to secure detention, and collaboration with and referrals to community providers. The staff attorney is also responsible for other advocacy activities, including community training, outreach, and policy work on behalf of our client base.

    We are seeking candidates who are committed to social justice and are passionate legal advocates for young people. Candidates should work well both independently and as a team member, be respectful and open to working with people from diverse backgrounds, enjoy creative problem solving, and value the creation of relationships across disciplines.     • Exceptional legal skills, preferably in the relevant areas of law (public housing, school discipline/special education, public health care, public benefits, re-entry issues, delinquency, child welfare, or other areas of youth related law)

    • Exceptional oral and written communication skills

    • Member in good standing of the Washington State Bar Association or eligible for reciprocity

    • Experience working with young people, especially 12-18 year olds

    • Demonstrated competence in working with diverse clients and communities

    • High level of professionalism and ethical standards

    • Must have access to a vehicle and have a valid driver’s license to travel throughout the county to meet client and agency needs

    • Strong organizational, technology, and project management skills

    • Demonstrated ability to collaborate effectively with other advocates and social service providers

    COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS

    Salary range begins at $48,369 and increases annually based on salary scale. Position comes with full benefits (including medical, dental, vision, long and short term disability).
