As a Deputy City Attorney, this position will be responsible for defending civil actions against the City of Tacoma, its various departments and employees. The successful candidate will be part of a team responsible for evaluating cases, developing case strategies, preparing cases for trial, appearing in court, filing briefs and pleadings on time both in trial court and the courts of appeal, building relationships with City departments and divisions, managing outside counsel, negotiating settlement agreements, and communicating with elected and appointed officials. This position will be involved in litigation involving tort claims, contract claims, claims under the Public Records Act, and civil rights claims. These claims span from relatively minor matters to intensely litigated cases involving severe injuries, death and/or matters of public importance. JOB DUTIES:
This position primarily advises the King County Wastewater Treatment Division, an agency within the King County Department of Natural Resources and Parks. The Wastewater Treatment Division operates King County’s regional wastewater system, serving approximately 1.8 million people, and has an active capital project program. The position involves providing legal assistance to the client on contract administration, claims review, and dispute resolution issues arising out of construction projects.
EXPERIENCE, QUALIFICATIONS, KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS:
The successful candidate should have three or more years of experience handling construction contract claims and disputes, public or private (public contract law knowledge desired, but not required). The candidate should also have knowledge and experience:
with alternative dispute processes, preparing a case for trial, conducting discovery, and participating in a trial;
working on construction claims for added compensation and time, delay damages, impact damages, assessment of liquidated damages and substantive law surrounding these issues;
with alternate project delivery methods, such as design-build and GCCM; and
working with engineers and scheduling and damages experts.
We are looking for candidates with excellent analytical, legal research and writing ability, substantive knowledge and experience on construction law issues, and great interpersonal communication skills. This is NOT an entry level position.
In addition, all PAO employees are expected to participate in PAO equity work, attending equity trainings and discussions, including but not limited to, Intro to Cultural Competency, Implicit Bias and Microaggressions, White Privilege/Fragility. PAO employees are expected to comply with equity and social justice principles, and to work with PAO colleagues, management, and county clients to identify opportunities for improvement
