Superior Court invites you to attend two informational Brown Bag lunch meetings to hear  presentations from Corrections, Superior Court, and other criminal justice partners on how the move to the new jail will impact your daily work on criminal cases.  Currently, we plan to start the first meeting with a panel presentation to provide information and will open the meeting to questions after presentations are complete.  Because this topic will, we believe, generate much discussion and many questions, we plan to hold two different sessions.  However, the panel presentation will only happen during the first meeting.  We look forward to sponsoring this important discussion and to seeing many of you there!

The seminar cohort will consist of senior women aiming to serve on more influential boards or to move from nonprofit to private company or small public company boards as part of a larger roadmap. Speakers include Colleen Brown, Dawn Lepore, Connie Collingsworth and many others, including Betsy Berkhemer-Credaire, author of "The Board Game - How Smart Women become Corporate Directors."

Choosing the right school for your child can be challenging as there are so many great public and independent schools in the greater Seattle area.  And after you have decided on a school, there may be times when you question whether the school is a good fit for your child’s abilities, learning style, and personality.  Our guest speaker Anne Sarewitz is an independent educational consultant who is familiar with several different schools in the area and how they meet the needs of different types of students.  Anne will be giving us some food for thought on what traits to look for in a school and how you can determine whether your child and the school are a good fit.  She will also be available to answer any questions that MAMA Seattle members may have about being involved with their children’s schools and times when it may make sense to work with an educational consultant.

Anne Sarewitz has over 25 years of Seattle independent schools. Born and raised in Seattle, Anne attended Forest Ridge School of the Sacred Heart where she remains an active alumna. From 1988-1999, her 3 daughters attended Epiphany School where she had the opportunity to become very involved as a parent. She was the president of the parent association and auction chair among other parent activities. Also during that time, she served as president of the Board of Trustees for 4 years. As her children graduated and moved on to middle and upper school, Anne again became involved in the parent associations at both University Prep and Lakeside School. The volunteer opportunities were abundant, which allowed Anne to give back to the schools that were educating her children while also continuing to learn about how different independent schools operate.

In 2001, Anne was given the opportunity to go back to Epiphany School as their director of admission and financial aid. During her 11 year tenure as admission director at Epiphany, she had the pleasure of meeting hundreds of families looking for a good school fit for their children. Among her many responsibilities, one of her favorites was working with students moving on to middle school. Putting the pieces of the puzzle together to find a good fit for the student was a wonderful challenge for her.

Most recently, Anne has held the position of interim director of admissions and financial aid at The Bush School. Managing all aspects of Kindergarten-12th Grade admissions, she observed the "other side" of middle and upper school placement, from the perspective of the admitting school. Her thorough knowledge of the Seattle independent school admissions landscape gives her the opportunity to work with parents and students to find a school that is “right” for them.

The Washington State Bar Association Council on Public Defense (CPD) has two openings for attorneys in private practice to each serve two year terms.  While experience with criminal defense work is helpful the attorney need not have practiced as a public defender. The CPD is a 23 member body that includes representatives from the Washington Supreme Court, the superior courts and the district courts, representatives of local governments as well as public defender attorneys, attorneys in private practice and members of the public.  The CPD has developed standards for indigent defense services that have been approved by the Board of Governors and adopted by the Supreme Court.  The CPD’s work plan for the next 18 months includes work on standards for attorneys representing juveniles charged with offenses and a summit on the mentally ill in the criminal justice system.

The application deadline is this Thursday, April 30, 2015.  WSBA staff ask that applications be submitted by noon.  Anyone interested in the position can get more information by writing directly to Bonnie Sterken, staff to the CPD, at bonnies@wsba.org.
